Facebook Enables Free Calls by Messenger in Brazil

In early January the Facebook began testing the functionality of links between its members through its Facebook Messenger app, available for Android and iOS. This option was available for a small group of users, and everyone in Canada or the US.Today Facebook has enabled the free calls to users in Brazil.

Information is Thiago Hirai, Facebook software engineer who helped develop this functionality. According to a post on your profile on the site, this option has been activated today and is available for 95% of users of Facebook applications in Brazil.

To make calls simply select a contact from the list on Facebook Messenger, tap the ‘i’ icon in the top right corner of the profile and select the “Free Call” option. This option is only active if both users have the latest version of Facebook Messenger for iOS or Android.

I tested the free connection with some friends and the audio quality is comparable to that of a common connection for the GSM network. In the case of iOS application, the incoming call notice is a common notification, such as Skype, and it works the same way when you are in the background, displaying a red bar at the top of the screen. The app lets you make calls both via WiFi as a 3G connection.

For some time that Facebook allows video calls between its users by the desktop version of the site, with a little help Skype in terms of connection. But it is the first time the free voice call option by Facebook Messenger is available for Brazilian members of the social network.

Who want to test, you can download Facebook Messenger in the iTunes App Store or Google Play.

Update at 22:40 | A group of users reported that it is necessary to have a number of mobile registered in the Facebook profile for the option to appear. I sent a message to the Facebook of advice with this issue and will update the post when you receive a response.
