LG Optimus 3D Max in the Test

With the Optimus 3D Max, LG provides already the second generation of its 3D smartphones. It offers in particular improvements in detail.

In February 2011, LG Electronics unveiled the first Smartphone with a 3D display with P920 Optimus 3D. Just in time a year afterwards LG introduced the successor to its 3D-Telefons: the P720 Optimus 3D Max. And whose name is program: when compared to its predecessor, the new model maximize not only the 3D experience.

Facilities: Moderate hardware tuning

The new owes the progress on all fronts his higher computing power. No huge step is nominally increased by 200 MHz clock rate of the TI-dual-core processor (1.2 GHz with the 3D Max, 1 GHz with its predecessor). In practice, the increase affects but felt: the reactions take place on all inputs and program functions at lightning speed, the Optimus 3D Max completed even the sometimes complex calculations of three-dimensional images effortlessly.

Just a pity that LG delivers the Optimus 3D Max with the now slightly dusty Android version 2.3.6 gingerbread; an update to the current version 4.0 ice cream sandwich but is promised for the near future. Computing power and features of LG smartphones are also fu? r this latest version of Google’s Smartphone operating system definitely appropriate.

In many other aspects of the hardware equipment, LG has made no major changes compared to its predecessor: the internal flash memory is still 8 GB, of which about 5.3 GB to the user remain free. Fortunately, the memory can be expanded with a MicroSD card up to 32 GB.

A newly-developed backup app also allows to backup the contents of your Smartphone on the memory card. Also the 1 GB RAM size remains unchanged, which is fully sufficient for the latest versions of Android and apps.

Housing and processing: Slim and elegant

It is noteworthy that it is managed for the LG engineers to reduce the housing thickness from previously 12 to now 9.6 mm – especially as the 3D display is something thicker than his 2D-Pendants. Thanks to the 4.3 inch display (diagonal 10.9 cm), the device is not a tiny, but slim and elegant. Also the build quality is top – and that even though is that Ru on the other hand cover can be removed and gives free access to battery, SIM and memory card slot.

In the Department of radio sets to the Optimus 3D Max in HSPA mode 21.0 Mbps in the downlink (previous: 14.4 Mbit / s), the uplink is unchanged at 5.76 Mbps quad-band GSM and GPRS, WI-FI after 11 b / g / n standard and Bluetooth 3.0 are of course on board, as well an FM radio.

NFC tags included

A novelty is equipped with the short-range wireless NFC (Near Field Communications). This technique provided for future payment and data exchange applications takes root in the Smartphone world, slowly but surely. LG has devised a clever application for today, which propagated the manufacturer under the name of “LG day +”: three self adhesive labels are included with the phones (English “tags”) labeled car, Office and sleep.

It is possible to paste the owner of Optimus 3D Max in the center console of his car, on his desk and on his bedside table. He pushes the Smartphone on the respective day, automatically activate the presets stored under the appropriate name such as mute, speakerphone etc.

The technical data here unchanged, but significantly improved in detail the stereo camera, which consists of two 5-megapixel sensors and a LED flash presents itself. Now means? she appreciated “Touch focus”, so the definition of the image sharpness at your fingertips, or on request of the auto focus on faces (“face tracking”). Also, the shutter lag on a few tenths of a second is dropped. In video mode, the processor performance now allows full HD recording (say, a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels), either in 2D or 3D.

Much software for 3D

Just the photography and filming in 3D is fun, especially as the impressive results consider let right on the display of the Optimus 3D Max. Due to the construction work the latter u? by the way only in landscape mode.

LG supports the pleasure with a series of successful apps and system functions. So a 3D-taugliches video-editing software is also the basic facilities such as a 3D converter that converts two-dimensional images quickly and surprisingly well in three-dimensional views. This trick will also work with the maps from Google maps – what however did not succeed.

Still, three pre-installed games, the interactive picture book “Gulliver’s travels” as well as a link to the special 3D channel from YouTube can be found in the 3D menu. Total non lacking so three-dimensional content. Thoughtful your Smartphone before you call reminds of the 3D mode, not to overdo it with the spatial fun.

In fact the 3D-Spielereien effort far more eyes than the conventional 2D, which also dominates the device. Unless the software not only on 3D is designed, the representation can be with a button attached to the edge of the housing quickly between 2D and 3D switch.

If you want, can transfer all 3D content via HDMI to a 3D-tauglichen TV and enjoy then there with glasses, but on larger screen area. Just a pity that LG does not deliver with the required for this connection MHL adapter, which branches off the HDMI signals from the micro-USB connector. Alternatively the Optimus 3D Max supports DLNA standard wireless connections.

Good performances in the measuring laboratory

In our laboratory, the Optimus Max delivers a good idea. A typical endurance of over five hours and a talk time of over four hours are all decent values. Also the radio and acoustic performances are at a good level. The display is sufficiently bright with appropriate 408 candela per m2, there is much lighter models.

Conclusion: more than one 3D-Spielzeug

Thus, the buyer of the LG Optimus Max 3D gets not only an entertaining 3D-Spielzeug, but also a compelling Android Smartphone which lacks any relevant function – at least once the promised “ice cream sandwich” update will be really available.
