Simple Audio Roomplayer in the Test

Simple audio has an ambitious goal: simple, intuitive network player, fantastic sound – and which still remain affordable for all music lovers: Roomplayer 2, Roomplayer 1 in the test.

Network players can be appealing for music lovers for very different reasons. On the one hand, advance ripping decoupled from the operation of the CDs, the loss by definition – and error-free transport in the player and the Elimination of crucial sources of interference create (drive around) ideal conditions for an extremely high-quality playback of digital music.

On the other hand Network HiFi but also offers a new dimension of comfort: the music is first on the server, are everywhere in the House independent, small or large, expensive or cheap, dominant or almost invisible systems that refresh the room. The entire digital sound honey, from downloading paid up to the ribbed SACD is everywhere available without loss on the home network.

Manufacturers such as Sonos, Logitech or room box have developed with their player programs especially comfort and versatility, to the cinema cellar designed the appropriate player and complete systems for each listening situation of the bathroom, programmed intuitively understandable user interfaces and integrates an ever-increasing number of online music services , to perfectly round off the local music library. High-Ender such as Linn or T + A have, however, more focused to the Sonic benefits of network technology.

Best of both worlds

In between was until now a gap: clear, there are also Multiroom systems from a dozen Linn’s; Vice versa the easy Sonos – and Squeezebox players as digital sources are sometimes extremely refined installations environments.

But only simple audio equipment has developed explicitly for this gap: the two Roomplayer models should come out with a minimum of network infrastructure and to bring from IT rivets in a few minutes be – like a Sonos.

At the same time they should play out uncompromisingly the aural trumps of the principle of streaming – like a Linn, but not which raised the price.

Simple audio Roomplayer 2 + 1

Technical and commercial competence there is ever no shortage for simple audio: Managing Director Peter Murphy, the commercial Director of Martin Dalgleish and the Development Director Alistair Brown three prominent former Linn-sit with people in the Executive Suite. Logically, that is headquartered in Glasgow. It is, however, already less self-evident that the Roomplayer are completely assembled in Scotland.

Same same, but different

The description of the concept couldn’t get, to draw comparisons between simple audio and the great – officially, of course implied – examples, Sonos and Linn. Striking parallel to Sonos: it has several simple player, only one of them must have direct contact to the LAN.

All other players in a way even bring their network. For this, they use but not own cellular network a la Sonos, but Powerline Modems integrated in the players, sending the packets via the power line from device to device.

The first connection to the – freely settable – “master” players can establish themselves via mains by switching between a commercially available Powerline adapter (E.g. from Devolo). Becomes the network cable to the network cable – simple promises an even greater noise immunity and data bandwidth than with Wi-FI itself of them.

The greater transmission rates has not wasted left simple audio and the player from the outset for HD files specified: 24 bit/96 kHz now go, the rarer 192 kHz files to be playable for a future software upgrade. On this point, the Scots are now already superior to their U.S. counterparts.

UPNP? Nope… or you!

When you access on the owner’s hard disks music collection moves simple audio in turn similar to such as Sonos: with its own intelligence and without relying on the preparatory work of a media server program. The “master” finds the path to the music folders on the simple, uncluttered control program (Mac or PC), scans, and then automatically sorts it. It is no matter whether the music on the PC itself is located (in your iTunes library) or was stored on a network storage (NAS).

In the latter case, the Setup program also play must run currently but otherwise the player no longer finds the music on the NAS. Rather than fix this flaw, the forthcoming (at the time but still not available) software update promises now also support for External UPnP Server, say: Twonky media, for example, runs on the NAS the simple then also like conventional UPnP network players can rely on its sorting.

Nevertheless the results of own indexing without the accompanying PC should bring simple audio.

A player – many faces

When the Scots, this is even particularly important, because one of its most original features is based on: the ability to provide different users with each customized libraries. Because on the one hand, sharing a large music library is just the allure of a network music system, but on the other hand, this stimulus has limits. The almost complete “Bibi & Tina” radio drama collection of the youngest about must Yes not at night floods the albums list at the parents.

Conversely, meticulously put together playlists be interested in mostly the creating person – which is therefore glad, if it is not still more or less successful DJ-kicks all fellow users “Playlists”.

In the Simple Setup you tick just for each of the users (of which you freely can create many), what music should emerge each. The change from one user to another is then within seconds. Speaking of play lists: which can be create via control program or iPhone app on the fly, save and change as it is used by Sonos, Logitech or even Linn.

The Roomplayer’s are available in two variants: as a pure player to connect to existing plants, and with a built-in amplifier. Both models are based on identical network and transformer parts, for the Roomplayer 1 yet an additional Netzteilboard and the Board with the digital amps to do so.

Who wants to build a compact, low-cost system, gets here for 100 euros extra charge an amplification which individually would cost considerably more in terms of quality: the simple amp also with difficult boxes laid, sounded relaxed considerably large format and detail.

The tester had to seek comparison already a Linn sneaky whose internal Endstufen structured worked in the basic and midrange. The Sonos equivalent ZP-120 has performed alongside the simple audio skin dryness and less intense in color, so meant no real competition for the Roomplayer 1.

When the tester connected the Amplified Roomplayer 2 by RCA with the reference system, it was surprisingly tight even for the sneaky. It confirmed the impression of simple already had left during his one-week acclimation period in the private area of the author: already there the very lively, unobtrusive fine drawing in the treble being of the Scots players noticed, broadband, informative and very precise timing. The sneaky participated in same fullness of detail yet casual and above all with regard to voice something expressive, but the lead was not big really.

Simple audio an excellent streamer platform developed with the Roomplayern so. Now, it applies to the Scottish developers, just pay attention to the needs of their customers. The skills and capabilities of the Roomplayer can develop as dynamically, as they reliably do in Linn and Sonos already for years. AUDIO missing especially gapless playback and the consistent support for NAS drives at the time of the test. Both is already worked in Glasgow – until then the excellent sound needs to sweeten the wait time.
